Bitumen, any of several naturally occurring, hard, solid bitumen whose chief constituents, asphaltenes, have very large molecules. Bitumen’s are dark brown to black in color. They are insoluble in petroleum chemical and thus require heating to release their petroleum content. Though related to asphalts, Bitumen differ from them chemically and physically in some ways. Bitumen, for example, usually contain little or no inorganic minerals.
